| Dave Formula is the English keyboardist, songwriter and film-soundtrack
composer from Manchester, who is perhaps best known for his work with Magazine, long regarded as one of the most
significant & influential British bands. He also played & wrote for New Romantic ensemble Visage as well as world music band The Angel Brothers. Dave has been involved with seminal bands throughout his musical career. He kicked off things with St. Louis Union, who entered the hit parade in the 1965 'beat boom' with their debut 45 rpm release, Girl. Between 1965 and 1967 they made the infamous Twisted Wheel Club in Manchester their HQ and they can be seen performing two numbers in the cult beat film The Ghost Goes Gear, available for purchase on DVD and to view on YouTube.com. Nowadays they are rightly rated in mod circles as the bees-knees. Dave next showed up on the radar as the creator and player of the multi-layered keyboard sounds in Magazine. Thereafter Dave was a founding member of the influential 'futurist' group Visage. Dave co-wrote on both Visage albums before turning his attentions to production. He established London's Strongroom recording studios with Richard Boote and later the rural Red Bird studios, where he now resides and writes & produces records, as well as creating soundtracks and other ambient recordings for, amongst others, the BBC, independent film makers and the British Film Institute. Dave rejoined his Magazine colleagues for five sold-out shows in February 2009 to great critical response and in Summer 2009 Magazine played several European festivals and an acclaimed show at London's Royal Festival Hall. The band closed the year with TV appearances on Later With Jools Holland and BBC Electric Proms. In late October 2011 Magazine released a new album – No Thyself – their first in 30 years; followed in November by a nine-day tour of the UK. |
